Sabine Lake Fishing!! March Madness Baby!!

March trout fishing on Sabine Lake can be hit or miss. March brings some of the most unpredictable weather of the season. One day calm seas and the next howling winds.  This time of the year trout and redfish can still be caught on those windy days. The most southern pocket of Sabine Lake will start producing nice limits and quality size trout. The Reef area will be the best places to cut long drifts and find suspending trout and redfish. Incoming tides will be most productive times to fish the area. Try throwing soft plastics rigged on quater ounce jigheads. Glow/chart and pumpkin seed/chart and limetreuse will be great color choices. Here lately, trout have been moving in and off the flats.  These fish in the pictures were caught Tuesday afternoon.0_00_0_0_01

Winter time speckled trout on Sabine Lake

100_09531The key to catching speckled trout on Sabine Lake in the winter time is locating bait. The weather has been cold for awhile, but two or three days of warmer weather has been triggering the bite.  As the water warms up, it tends to get the baitfish (mullet) active and the sow trout are not far behind them. Look for any surface activity such as mullet jumping on the flats or even swimming under the surface. If there is bait, there is speckled trout.  The best methods this time of the year is by far is wade and drift fishing.  Fish your shallow flats with isolated shell and try to also fish an area where there is deep water near by. On the cooler days the speckled trout will move into bayous or drop offs. When it warms back up, the spceckled trout will head toward the flats to feast on mullet.  Afternoon fishing has been producing the most consistent bite. The speckled trout have been hammering the Flounder Pounder RAT FISH!! For any of you anglers who do not have one, i would highly recommend contacting Joe and Phill Ortiz at flounderpounder.net. These ratfish can be fished slowly and have rattling eyes which is triggering the bite. Also many fish catching colors available! Fishing should remain to get hotter as Spring time is approaching, but for now pick and choose the warmer Winter days and you will be greatly rewarded.  Coffee ground cove still remains one of the better spots to catch reds and speckled trout!

December 15th Reds and Trout!!

Sabine Lake is still producing nice limits of redfish and  trout. The key to catching these winter fish right now is choosing the right days to fish! You have to pick your days between weather patterns such as cold fronts. The water temps are cool right now but two days of warmer weather has been  triggering the bite lately. Remember to fish slow and hard and when you find them and you can wear them out!  Soft plastics rigged on 1/8th jig heads in red shad has been the ticket along with catch 200’s and corkies.1015091027_jpg1015091027_jpg_10150910270_0104362715610_010436770461

Bird Action Hit and Miss!! Winter Pattern Developing!!

100_00173100_0778As the water begins to cool down more and more on Sabine Lake, fishing  patterns will alternate also. Instead of expecting bird action each time out fish will be relating more and more to water temps, salinity, and baitfish. Big trout will start showing up on the shallow flats of the lake. Tide and water temps will dictate what time of day these sow trout will feed. Key on big mullet concentrated in an area and also peaks of tide changes. What to throw the same old consistent winter baits. Corky devils, corkies, catch 2000’s and soft plastics rigged on 1/8 th jigheads retrieved slowly. Where to fish, well I would tell  you ,but thats no fun! Challenge yourself  just like every other guide had to do and you will become a better fishermen. It will make you appreciate a bite and you will have  a sense of satisfaction figuring out winter trout on your own. Keep chunking and fish hard! By the way starting on the North end of the lake is a good choice! OOPS!!

Stuffed Flounder Instead Of Turkey!!

100_0759We have finally reached the peek of the flounder run. Right now you have that perfect chance to catch one of those doormat flounder, you always here about! Just recently, I had a chance to fish with my brother, Justin Trahan and Blandon Badon. These guys have figured out  how to catch doormats. The number one lure of choice has been the Flounder Pounder!! These baits can be purchase from Phill and Joe Ortiz at flounderpounder.net or locally in Sulphur, Louisiana at the Tackle Box located on maplewood drive.  These lures are designed to increase hook up ration 3:1. Also there is no other bait out there that can be presented like theirs! I would highly recommend purchasing some now! The flounder bite should remain strong untill December!! So get on that Calcasieu/Sabine Ship Channel and catch you some!!100_0760

Thursday November 5th More Reds and Trout!!

Fished with George Dearbornne and his crew out of Texas. We started out in the Lake first and caught trout under the birds!! The fish were real skittish and it was a soft bite. The water on the north end of the lake looked like chocolate milk. We still managed to catch fish there. The better bite was down South with a little bit of better water clarity. After putting 20 trout in the box, we decided to go catch the redfish!  Believe me, we did! Caught our twenty five reds in an hour and released just as many! REDFISH BITE IS ON!!   Its been a long time since I have seen that many reds in the marsh! It is so much fun to watch clients rods bend and lines breaking! Just another awesome day on Sabine Lake!!  I hope Taylor, Perry,Tom and George will 100_0729100_0730 remember this trip and be able to come back and do it again!! Great fishing guys!

Doormat Flounder Showing Up!!

The flounder bite is about to really heat up on Sabine Lake. Water temps have finally fallen enough to start the first wave of flounder migration. Flounder are preparing to head to the Gulf of Mexico to spawn. These fish stack in the ship channel and mouths of bayous this time of year. Due to the recent flounder regulations in Texas, fisherman should try to fish Louisiana where limits are still liberal. Book now to catch trophy flounder!!october-139

Fishing on Sabine Lake is getting better!

The speckled trout are starting to school up in Sabine Lake. Redfish are biting along the surf from Little Florida, Louisiana all the way to the Sabine Pass Jetties. Try fishing the North end of Sabine Lake and the Intracoastal for redfish and flounder with live finger mullet is the best bite. Speckled Trout are hitting topwaters along with soft plastics rigged on 1/4 ounce jigheads. Red Shad and chartreuse or the best colors.fish1-004
