The birds are working everywhere and my buddy killed them yesterday. We need to go in the morning and get in on the “Easy Bite.” Well to your surprise it isn’t anything like your buddy experienced the day before. The birds are real skittish when you approach them and you are only able to land a few undersize fish out of each group. As the day lingers on there are no birds to be found. Frustrated by the days high expectations and lets not forget about all the other boats running around. You and your bud call it quits. Could the day have been a total waste? Not always! Here are just a few tacticts that I use that might just save the day when the birds aren’t working.
FISHING THE BAYOUS!!
Alot of times fishing the mouths of bayous on an outgoing tide can produce nice results. Fish from the shallow edges back out to the center. Most fish will be located along a drop. A drop which maybe from 2-6ft of water or as little as 1-3ft. Once a fish is caught try to remember exactly how it was caught. This can become a pattern. If a flounder is caught usually this time of year fishing this way, don’t quit fishing that spot! Flounder will be stacked in a certain spot at times. Fishing the bayous is a great way to salvage a bad day when things aren’t working well on the main lake chasing schoolies. By the way, What should I throw? “Berkley Gulp” is the best chance to hook up on slow days. Fish the shrimp or mullet style baits will be best. Also fish with a color you have confidence in. Personally, I prefer chartreuse. Good Luck and Good Fishing!!
