Fishing Sabine Lake for trophy speckled trout in Spring
There is something extremely special about that first breath of saltwater air at daylight as you slip out of the boat on a nervous bait filled bank on Sabine Lake in the Spring. The speckled trout are gearing up for spawn and the females are aggressive and very territorial during this time period. If you can find nervous bait, you will undoubtedly find trophy speckled trout.
The bait to key on for speckled trout in the Spring time on Sabine Lake is shad, pogie and mullet. A lot of fish will be chasing shrimp as they make their way back into the estuary, but if you want to catch speckled trout and especially trophy class speckled trout, always key on shad, pogie and mullet.
Topwater fishing is hot action in Spring time on Sabine Lake. Fishing a TopDog, Super Spook, SkitterWalk or any other similar topwater lure will inevitably get you success. Subsurface lures such as the Catch 2000 and Corky will catch you some decent fish too if you match your lure to the bait properly. Soft plastics in the Spring time on Sabine Lake can be summed up in two words: Saltwater Assassin. Fishing the proper color variation with a 1/8oz to 3/8oz jig head will also almost assure you of some nice speckled trout.
Hitting the banks hard from daylight for 2 or 3 hours will usually be your best time to hit them hard. Also pay special attention to your tidal movements and fish the drops, guts, grooves, points and grassy areas around the banks. After this initial bite has ended, move to drifting and trolling in the 5 to 8 foot of water range. Key on shell and reefs to have your best chance through midday. Once the afternoon sun heats up the water and the last day tidal movement begins, make your way back to the banks.
Fishing Sabine Lake is not an experience… it’s a way of life.
